The Amount of Toothpaste You’re Using is Important

How much toothpaste does my child need? Great question! The amount of toothpaste needed is more important than you’d think. This is especially true if you’re using fluoride toothpaste.

Do you create that perfectly shaped glob of toothpaste, like we see in every commercial? If so, that’s way too much! ๐Ÿ™‚

All children 3 years and older require a “pea-sized” amount of fluoride toothpaste. For other children under 3 years old, only a “rice-sized” amount is needed. This recommendation is only for fluoride toothpaste. The reason for the “rice-sized” amount for younger children is to prevent excess fluoride ingestion. Most children under 3 eat the toothpaste, instead of spitting it out! Here is a picture for reference:

Make sure you brush your child’s teeth twice a day, for two minutes each time, and avoid rinsing after brushing to maximize the beneficial effect of fluoride. I promise it’s worth it!

It’s recommended parents supervise their child’s brushing, and also step in if needed to get any missed spots. Around age 8, children will likely be fine brushing on their own.

Product Recommendations

A great toothpaste that my patients and children love is Tanner’s Tasty Paste. They have several flavors, and are free of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, artificial flavors and colors.

Sonicare makes an awesome toothbrush for kids. I love that it has a timer, and offers a free interactive app where kids can track their progress. I haven’t seen any other brush work this well, so I’m constantly recommending it.

Flossing is just as important as brushing, and children should have their teeth flossed nightly. I recommend Plackers, as they’re quick and efficient.

Fluoride vs. No Fluoride

Lastly, If you’re deciding between fluoridated toothpaste and non-fluoridated toothpaste, there is plenty of research available out there. Personally, I recommend fluoride toothpaste for my patients and my children. The AAPD recommends fluoride toothpaste for children of all ages. It’s important that you research this topic and make the decision that’s best for your family.
